 Concussion Treatment FAQs

  • Yes. Happy Brain Physical Therapy provides specialized concussion treatment in Park City, Utah for symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, vertigo, brain fog, and post-concussion syndrome.

  • A concussion occurs when the brain experiences a sudden acceleration or deceleration inside the skull. This can happen from a direct hit to the head, a fall, a sports injury, or even a strong impact to the body that causes the brain to move rapidly.

Common signs of a concussion include headaches, dizziness, nausea, balance problems, sensitivity to light or noise, difficulty concentrating, and feeling mentally “foggy.” Symptoms may appear immediately or develop hours to days after an injury.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, or difficulty thinking after a fall, sports injury, or accident, it is important to be evaluated by a healthcare professional experienced in concussion care.

Seek emergency medical attention if you experience severe headache, repeated vomiting, seizures, loss of consciousness longer than one minute, worsening confusion, or weakness in the arms or legs.

  • Concussion symptoms vary from person to person and can affect multiple systems in the body.

    Common symptoms include:

    • Headaches or pressure in the head
    • Dizziness or balance problems
    • Vertigo or spinning sensations
    • Blurred or double vision
    • Light or noise sensitivity
    • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
    • Fatigue or low energy
    • Neck pain or stiffness
    • Irritability, anxiety, or mood changes

These symptoms occur because a concussion disrupts how different areas of the brain communicate with each other. A thorough evaluation helps determine which systems are affected so treatment can target the underlying cause of symptoms.

  • Dizziness is one of the most common symptoms after a concussion. It can occur when the injury affects the vestibular system (the inner ear balance system), vision, the neck, or how the brain processes movement and spatial awareness.

    People may experience dizziness as:

    • Lightheadedness
    • A sense of imbalance
    • Feeling like the room is spinning (vertigo)
    • Motion sensitivity when moving the head or walking

Because several systems can contribute to dizziness, treatment begins with identifying the underlying cause. Concussion rehabilitation may include vestibular therapy, cervical treatment for the neck, vision exercises, and gradual return-to-activity exercise programs to help restore normal balance and movement.

  • Recovery time varies depending on the individual and the systems affected by the injury. Many people recover within a few weeks, while others experience symptoms for months. Targeted rehabilitation that addresses the underlying systems contributing to symptoms can often help people recover more efficiently.

  • Post-concussion syndrome refers to symptoms that persist beyond the expected recovery period after a concussion. These symptoms may include headaches, dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, light sensitivity, and exercise intolerance.

Persistent symptoms often occur when certain systems—such as the vestibular system, vision, neck, or autonomic nervous system—have not fully recovered. A targeted rehabilitation approach can help address these contributing factors.

  • You should seek evaluation if concussion symptoms persist for more than a few days or interfere with your ability to work, exercise, read, or tolerate normal daily activities. Early evaluation can help identify the systems contributing to symptoms and guide appropriate treatment.

  • Yes. Physical therapy is one of the most effective treatments for persistent concussion symptoms. Treatment may include vestibular therapy for dizziness, cervical therapy for headaches and neck pain, vision exercises, and progressive aerobic exercise to improve nervous system regulation.
